For more than a decade, we have been told that insurgent populists are challenging a complacent post-political technocratic establishment. Combatants on both sides testify to this polarization. Poland’s Donald Tusk, former President of the European Council and the country’s current prime minister, stated back in 2017 that “we must challenge the populists”—and he did so, defeating the right-wing Law and Justice Party in 2023. French President Emmanuel Macron warned last year that “populists” risk undermining the European bloc from within. On the other side, Britain’s Nigel Farage declared the same year that “nation-state democracy” was “making a comeback against the globalists.” More recently, Italy’s Giorgia Meloni railed against “the global leftist liberal network” created in the 1990s by Tony Blair and Bill Clinton.

Born to a poor Jewish family in Cold War Budapest, Polgar would emerge as the one of the greatest female chess players the world has ever seen. While still a teenager, she became the first woman to qualify for the men’s World Chess Championship cycle. She went on to become the highest rated female chess player on the planet and, at age 21, the first woman to earn the men’s Grandmaster title—chess’ highest designation. But to get there, she had to endure sexism, anti-Semitism, state-sponsored intimidation, and even violent assault. Throw in sabotage, betrayal, and powerful enemies, and you have a sense of what she went through while breaking chess’ glass ceiling.

 

Polgar eventually left Hungary and started a new life as an American citizen. After retiring as a player, she became the only female Division 1 college coach in the country and built two separate college chess dynasties from scratch—at Texas Tech in Lubbock (where she now resides) and Webster University in St. Louis—leading them to more national titles, world championships, major titles, and Olympiad medals, especially gold, than all other college chess teams in the United States combined!

BEYOND THE RED ZONE: SPORTS TRAVEL AND THE DEPORTATION INDUSTRY

Every week, thousands of migrants are shackled at the hands and feet and forced onto deportation flights to destinations across the globe. While the flights are contracted by U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE), most are run by a shadowy network of private charter companies that operate with no effective oversight. In some cases, migrants are beaten or brutalized aboard the plane. In others, the planes transport them to situations where they are likely to experience harms as grave as torture, assault, or even enslavement. These practices violate U.S. law, international law, and written policies of the Department of Homeland Security, yet although abuses have been documented in human rights reports, described by journalists, discussed by legal scholars,aired in federal court, and reported through internal DHS mechanisms, neither DHS, nor the FAA, nor the U.S. Congress has taken any meaningful steps to stop abuses aboard deportation flights. Indeed, this remains a lucrative and largely secret business, in which contractors have billed U.S. taxpayers for over a million dollars per flight, received Covid-19 bailout funds despite operating in an industry which boomed during the pandemic, and may even receive payment whether they fly or not, under a guaranteed minimum payment scheme similar to that in place at many private detention centers.
