As I write this it's now 3:49am early on May 10th 2020. Mother's Day. As many of you know, I work in one of the emergency shelters in Oakland, California and we're trying to raise some money to get some gifts for the mothers in the shelters. If you can help, that would be AMAZING! If not, take a listen and share. The profile picture for this episode is a picture of my mother, Pam Davis and my daughter Jaila almost 22 years ago!

Man, this one was a bit tough for me, not gonna lie. We had a fire at the emergency shelter I work at, and it caused us to have to open up another facility to house people that had to evacuate due to damages from the fire. We're a bit understaffed, so I've been working 3 17 hours days in a row, and I'm over a week straight, so I had to muster a litter something extra for this one. I'm really proud of this episode. We have Kelvin Martinez, psychotherapist and homeless advocate in Southern California. Also, fun fact, he went to seminary school! We had, a great talk about not just the unhoused community, but working in the world, the obstacles we face, bureaucratic, sometimes even our own hubris. How do you help and have it be paternalistic hand wringing. Take a listen, and PLEASE follow Kelvin on Twitter here:

Power without love is reckless and abusive, and love without power is sentimental and anemic. Power at its best is love implementing the demands of justice, and justice at its best is power correcting everything that stands against love.
― Martin Luther King Jr.
Without concrete signs of divine presence in the lives of the poor, the gospel becomes simply an opiate; rather than liberating the powerless from humiliation and suffering, the gospel becomes a drug that helps them adjust to this world by looking for “pie in the sky.”
― James H. Cone, The Cross and the Lynching Tree
The authoritarian character worships the past. What has been, will eternally be. To wish or to work for something that has not yet been before is crime or madness. The miracle of creation—and creation is always a miracle—is outside of his range of emotional experience.”
― Erich Fromm, Escape from Freedom

So EXCITED for this one. Not only is it episode 25, not only is it Marx's birthday, but I got to interview the Democratic Socialist running for the first Wyoming senate seat in 24 years, Yana Ludwig. Yana is running a truly progressive campaign in an extremely red state. We discuss the hurdles she must overcome to be the first Democrat to represent Wyoming in the senate in 43 years!
We know times are tough at the moment, but every little bit helps to move the senate in a more progressive direction. Donate to Yana for Wyo's campaign!
Thank you guys so much for taking the time to check this out. Please spread the love and share these episodes, subscribe, and if you can, become a patron. You'll free Bitter Lake and LFADM merch, live shows, and music! Speaking of music, we'll be releasing a new song VERY SOON for PATRONS first, followed by a "shelter in place" EP. BECOME A PATRON!

Very honored to have to leftist economist Arash Kolahi. We discuss with so many newly radicalized leftists inspired by the campaign of Bernie Sanders, what is the future of the movement outside of electoral politics.

Bitter Lake Presents Soundwaves Ep. 22: Cage Fighting w/ the SweetMBA
Wednesday Apr 22, 2020
Wednesday Apr 22, 2020
On this episode I had LONG TIME homie and fellow podcaster, The Sweet MBA from the Cage Against the Machine podcast. Cage Against The Machine podcast focused on celebrating mixed martial artists, hip hop culture, education and business. We aim to make listeners as passionate about the sport of mma as we are.
Sweet and I go back to the mid 90's with Bay Area hip when we were just kids in high school freestylin' on Telegraph Ave in Berkeley, CA, going and performing at underground shows, making and selling our music on corners, it was a good time. We reminisce of the "good 'ol days", but Sweet reminds me that we can't romanticize the past too much...I agree.
Sweet will be back on the show, as you'll hear with this one, 90 minutes isn't enough time for this guy.
Thank you so much for listening to the show, we appreciate everyone that tunes in, if you can, please share these episodes on social media, help spread the word, and if you can become a patron. We have lots of extra content and FREE STUFF!!

Bitter Lake Presents Soundwaves Ep 20: Back in the Day w/ Thom and Paul of Unjust
Saturday Apr 11, 2020
Saturday Apr 11, 2020
Back in the late 90's early 00's Unjust was IT. Breaking through the underground to get regular mainstream radio airplay it seemed as the guys were on their way to possible rock n' roll stardom, much like their contemporaries the Deftones. It was about to be their time. But the band took a different route. They followed their other passions and pressed pause on the band. I've always wanted to ask the guys what happened? It was almost like they just...disappeared. Packing clubs one day, then without warning, they were gone. In the years that have followed I've often wanted to ask the guys what prompted them to make the move away from music, play it "safe" as they say. As a fan I was hurt, but as a man with responsibilities and other aspirations outside of just music, I understand.
They played their first show at the legendary Gillman at the age of 12. They went on play the Dynamo Fest and countless packed shows from Oakland to Alaska. Forming at Adams Middle School in Richmond, CA, Unjust were not just my friends, but my introduction to heavy music, and their music has been a HUGE inspiration on everything I do musically.
In this episode we get to talk about the bands origins, playing shows when you're not even old enough to drive, getting signed, Bay Area clubs that are no more, and what's on the horizon for the guys.
Thank you Thom and Paul for taking the time to talk to me, thank you guys even more for the music.

One of the few people in the world I call my brother, William Lew dropped by (virtually) to talk about history of the AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) and the gentrification of youth sports. Will has been coaching basketball since 1994 and has had a few players in the NBA, (most notable being Damien Lillard of the Portland Trailblazers) D1, D2, and NAIA schools. Also, Will and I were in rap group in high school and he still makes beats...

He's an underground music staple. A true road dog. He hosts one of the best music podcasts out with guests like Buzz Osborne of the Melvins, Bill Gould of Faith No More, Steve Albini and so many more. He's a writer who's musing get published in the Huffington Post, and I'm lucky enough to sometimes play in his latest project Conan Neutron & the Secret Friends. In this episode we don't talk about much about music, but more about the state of affairs in the very important swing state of Wisconsin where voter suppression was pretty much upheld by the SCOTUS. Conan gives us a brief history on the right wing takeover of State House, the stripping of the Democratic Governor's power, and the death march that was the primary election amidst a pandemic on Tuesday.
Thank you again for taking the time to check this out, if you can, please become a patron, it's only $3 and you get all the bonus content of this show, special music releases and concerts that we do, and few bucks more we even send out MERCH!!!

Bitter Lake Presents Soundwaves Ep 17: Coronavirus is our Neoliberalism Wake Up Call
Thursday Apr 02, 2020
Thursday Apr 02, 2020
In this episode, well the Wednesday gang is all here! We discuss how market forces have not freed us, but it's only freed capital. Hospitals/Healthcare, housing, water, things that should be viewed as simply human rights have commodified to a point where the average person views that as normal. Recently a 17 year old child died from complications from coronavirus because he was denied due to lack of insurance. Our president is holding daily press conferences, that look and sound more like campaign rallies with surrounded by CEO's. It looks more like a dystopian nightmare where we've given up democracy to let market forces run roughshod over the world.
We of course also discuss, maybe the greatest crime documentary of all time, Tiger King.
Again, thank you guys SO MUCH for checking this out, if you haven't already, IF YOU CAN in these trying times, please become a patron. We have more fun content, merch from the band, livestreams and MORE! Follow and subscribe to us at the links below AND LET'S GET THE WORD OUT ABOUT THIS SHOW!
