For newly radicalized people that start to proclaim themselves Socialists/Communists/Marxist, the one thing that mainstream media indoctrinated family and friends throw at you is "VENEZUELA!" Right? "Oh you're a socialist huh? I guess you want the United States to become Venezuela?" Most don't understand the Bolivarian project, and the obstacles that Chavez faced until his death, and the issues that still plague the country.
I was able to get a hold of an expert on the subject, Dr. Gregory Wilpert, author of the book "Changing Venezuela by Taking Power: The History and Policies of the Chavez Government".
Dr. Wilpert has extensive experience in research and writing as a journalist and in the social sciences, as well as in progressive activism in the U.S. in the areas of global justice, economic policy, US Society, Latin America, labor, and environmental issues.

We all have fell victim to it. We've had the phone calls from bill collectors, some of us may have even had wage garnishments due to our debts. It always feels like you against a powerful machine that uses your hardship, or class as money machine.
I came across the Debt Collective and really believed in what they're doing. They're forming debtors unions to take the power away from these financial institutions and back into the hands of the people. From an article written by co-founder of Debt Collective Hannah Appel:
"Through the threat of collective nonpayment, debtors’ unions can leverage today’s mass indebtedness. And because so much of our lives have been financialized, this potential power goes far beyond an opportunity to reduce individual indebtedness. Debtors’ unions could demand mortgage write-downs, an end to racist lending practices, a cap on ballooning adjustable interest rates, student debt discharge, truly free public education, single-payer healthcare, or an end to money bail and extractive criminal justice fees. This is the provocation around which we organize at the Debt Collective."

The paper, prepared for The Square One Project’s Roundtable on Justice Policy, is part of the Institute’s ongoing research on racial banishment, the expulsion of Black, Brown, and Indigenous communities from our cities through criminalization, policing, and forced removal. With a focus on Los Angeles, the paper examines three regimes of racialized policing: the criminalization of the unhoused, nuisance abatement lawsuits (specifically the Citywide Nuisance Abatement Program, or CNAP), and the forfeiture of public housing. Since this is a paper written for a project concerned with the “social contract,” it concludes with a framework of rights, including “right to remain.” But as this national moment of reckoning in the United States has made vividly clear, such a right cannot be established without dismantling the role of racialized policing in maintaining propertied order. By bringing to light the many forms of spatial illegalization that are constitutive of racial banishment, the research presented in the paper makes a contribution to the ongoing work of housing justice.

He took on the richest man in the world in a fight for a just work environment. In the middle of a pandemic that spreading like wildfire. He was working in the epicenter of it. The conditions for their labor were, in a word, deadly. He tried to alert management about the dangers, and his voice for the most part went unheard, for they like most of us, are the casualties of capital. Collateral damage in a quest monopoly control and untold riches.
The man I speak of is Chris Smalls. The behemoth he faced off against was Jeff Bezos and Amazon. Here's a excerpt from the Guardian article that shows what happens you challenge capital power:
Chris Smalls, who had worked for Amazon for five years, was fired shortly after he helped organize a work stoppage at the company’s warehouse on Staten Island, New York, in protest over a lack of protective gear and hazard pay for employees. Amazon claims it fired Smalls for “violating social distancing guidelines and putting the safety of others at risk”.
Amazon’s general counsel, David Zapolsky, in notes from a meeting of top executives obtained by Vice, wrote: “He’s not smart, or articulate, and to the extent the press wants to focus on us versus him, we will be in a much stronger PR position than simply explaining for the umpteenth time how we’re trying to protect workers.”

One thing about this show is, I'm always looking for people to talk too. Many of the guests on here, I'm a fan of their work, and some, I stumble across via the net. And some, like this show's guest, I came across through social media. Ramon is a college student studying abroad in Buenos Aires, and he's the politics editor of Creative Loafing Charlotte.
We had went back and forth for a while until we FINALLY were able to schedule some time to talk. This is kid a very sharp. I had to keep reminding myself he's only 19! He did turn the conversation on me a bit, and I wasn't 100% ready for the pivot a little over half way through, but this was a good time, good talk, the kids are gonna be alright.

This is one I've been excited about for A WHILE! I think I booked Richard Rothstein about 3 months out. I read the book "The Color of Law" about 3 years ago and I LOVE IT! A great story of how the U.S. Government enacted racist policies that helped to widen a racial wealth gap that has has yet to be remedied.
