Great radical thinkers from Kwame Nkrumah to Amilcar Cabral and Even Frantz Fanon warned that a "neo-colonial bourgeoisie" would arise in the formerly colonized world and fulfil a management role in the exploitation of capitalist production throughout the Black and Brown world. This warning has come to fruition. Even in the United States, the Black Political Class acts as protectors of their own venal interests while acting as racial ventriloquists for the Black poor and working class for fatback and biscuits corporate patronage. In these circumstances is it logical to advocate for internal Black Class warfare against the petite bourgeois who act as the intermediaries with international capital and empire. Should there be an aggressive movement to displace these figures in the Black diaspora to create a politics based on the needs of the poor and working class of the Black world? How would such a program take place? What could be the costs?

The Spanish Civil War of the late 1930s was, in many ways, a dry run for the barbarities of the Second World War. The conflict pitted the forces of the Spanish Republic and their allies on the radical left against the Nationalists and their fascist backers. One of the most significant figures on the left at the time was Buenaventura Durruti, a veteran revolutionary and leading libertarian socialist. As clashes between the Nationalists and Republicans heated up, Durruti led anarchists against military forces in the Barcelona region and, later, in the defense of Madrid where he was killed in late 1936. We speak to Brenton Lengel, the author of a new graphic novel depicting Durruti’s life about who Durruti was, his historical significance, and how we might assess his legacy?

Brenton Christopher Lengel (born May 9, 1983) is an American playwright, screenwriter, and journalist noted for his anarchist political views and participation in the Occupy Wall Street protest movement. He is best known for his play North to Maine, the first play ever written about the Appalachian Trail and his international anarchist radio program Insurrection with Brenton Lengel.

The Frankfurt School meets Fisher in this critique of capitalism incorporating memes, mental illness and psychedelia into a proposed counterculture. Spring 2020 to 2021 was the year that did not take place. We witnessed a depression, not economically speaking, but in the psychological sense: A clinical depression of and by society itself. This depression was brought about not just by Covid isolation, but by the digital economy, fueled by social media and the meme. In the aftermath, this book revisits the main Frankfurt School theorists, Adorno, Horkheimer, Benjamin and Marcuse, who worked in the shadow of World War Two, during the rise of the culture industry. In examining their thoughts and drawing parallels with Fisher's Capitalist Realism, The Memeing of Mark Fisher aims to render the Frankfurt School as an incisive theoretical toolbox for the post-Covid digital age. Taking in the phenomena of QAnon, twitch streaming, and memes it argues that the dichotomy between culture and political praxis is a false one. Finally, as more people have access to the means for theoretical and cultural broadcasting, it is urged that the online left uses that access to build a real-life cultural and political movement.

The Haitian Revolution was one of the most important forces in changing the trajectory of the West in the 19th Century. The former slaves defeated three of the mightiest European powers to achieve their freedom and liberation. The question that is rarely asked is, what was the philosophical foundation of their governing structure after independence? Was Haiti trying to be an example of "Black Atlantic Humanism" in the form of Western Enlightenment Societies? Or was Haiti setting a different path in order to illustrate a rejection of the Western values to highlight their sheer racial hypocrisy? Also, was there a true consensus in Haiti after independence on these issues? We will ask the author of the book, "Haiti's Paper War," to find out.

Chelsea Stieber is an Associate Professor in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at the Catholic University of America. She is the author of Haiti’s Paper War: Post-independence Writing, Civil War, and the Making of the Republic, 1804–1954.

The rise of conservative talk radio, following the repeal of the Federal Communication Commission’s Fairness Doctrine in 1987, has had a profound impact on the political landscape of the United States. Taking advantage of the newly liberalized regulatory order, a wave of reactionary hosts, most notably Rush Limbaugh, took to the air to propagate their far-right political message. Indeed, they formed the vanguard of opposition to the Democratic Party administration of Bill Clinton. And, following the constitutional coup d’état that installed George W Bush as president, the rightist talkers emerged as key regime propagandists. While it is perhaps an exaggeration to claim that talk radio created the political divisions that bisect American society, conservative domination of the medium certainly fed the growing radicalism of the reactionary right. The power of talk radio both to groom and mobilize elements of the American public was not lost on the left flank of capital and, in 2004, Air America, a “progressive” talk radio network, was founded. Yet, this experiment failed and in 2010 the network was shut down. What was the American media landscape like in the 2000s? What explains the failure of Air America? And will the new plethora of independent online left media outlets be able to overcome the issues that brought down liberal talk radio or at they too doomed to fail?

In 1991, the Soviet Union dissolved in chaos ending the twentieth century’s first self-proclaimed worker’s state. For many in the West, the fact that the USSR collapsed under its own internal contradictions was evidence of the superiority of the liberal capitalist system over any potential rivals. In the heady years that followed, Francis Fukuyama declared that the fall of communism signaled “the end of history as such: that is, the end point of mankind’s ideological evolution and the universalization of Western liberal democracy as the final form of human government.” Viewed from 2021, such pontifications appear to be hubris of the highest order. Beginning with the 2008 economic crisis, through Brexit, Trump and now COVID, talk of the end of history has ended as the liberal democratic consensus evaporates. But what does the end of the end of history mean for the future?

The summer of 2020 was an explosive moment in America.  Not since the uprisings of the late 60’s had we seen the country, en masse , light up in a wave of fiery protest. With a string of high profile vigilante and police killings, the tipping point for people to take to the streets and demand justice was the police murder caught on camera of George Floyd in Minneapolis.  As bystanders stood by shouting for law enforcement officers to release their deadly hold, kneeling on the neck of Floyd, his death became the catalyst for a movement to not just defund bloated police budgets, but to do away with them altogether.  Promises were made by certain municipalities, but not much has been done in major metropolitan areas to change law enforcement. 

 

Did the Defund/Abolish movement do enough to get their demands met? Are we stuck in the era where hashtags and trending on social media are confused with true policy change?  With most of the country opening up, is this revolutionary moment gone? Can the activists that organized these radical protests pivot to electoral positions of power to enact real substantive change? We’ll ask these questions and more

 

This is Revolution.

Until recently, to most Americans, the spectrum of legitimate political discourse revolved around two ideological poles: liberalism and conservatism. Indeed, over the course of the fifty-year counterrevolution that began with the destruction of the radicalism of 68, liberal emerged as a slur on the political right. Even the Democratic Party - the institutional manifestation of the left flank of capital – seemed to shy away from the term ‘liberal’ as the notion that the United States was fundamentally a center right country came to be naturalized common sense amongst the beltway establishment. However, with the development of a vocal, albeit politically feeble, social democratic movement over the last five years, liberalism is facing challenges from the left. Indeed, today when someone utilizes the term “lib” in a derisive manner, it is very often from the perspective that liberalism represents a rightist ideology. At the same time, elements of the conservative movement - in particular those who advocate free market orthodoxy and bloviate endlessly about phantasmic threats to free speech - have sought to recast themselves as “classical liberals”. Yet, many Americans remain fundamentally ignorant of the complex historical relationship between liberalism and socialism. What is the relationship between these two ideological trends of the so-called left? How did these tendencies relate to one another historically? And are they mortal enemies or embittered kin?

Matthew McManus is Professor of Politics and International Relations at the University of Tec de Monterrey, Mexico, where he teaches political science and theory. Before assuming this position McManus worked for the Committee for International Justice and Accountability. He completed his PhD in 2017.
