Dr. Maria Repnikova is a scholar of global communication, with a comparative focus on China and Russia. Her research examines the processes of political resistance and persuasion in illiberal political contexts, drawing on ethnographic research approaches and extensive time in the field. Maria holds a doctorate from the University of Oxford, where she was a Rhodes Scholar. She speaks fluent Mandarin, Russian and Spanish. The courses taught at GSU include International Communication, Chinese Media, Politics and Society, and Communication in Global Contexts. You can follow her @MariaRepnikova.

THIS IS REVOLUTION＞podcast Ep. 219: World Orders and Catastrophic Change w/ Alfred McCoy

In his latest book, To Govern the Globe: World Orders and Catastrophic Change, historian Alfred McCoy explains how a succession of catastrophes—from the devastating Black Death of 1350 through the coming climate crisis of 2050—has produced a relentless succession of rising empires and fading world orders.

During the long centuries of Iberian and British imperial rule, the quest for new forms of energy led to the development of the colonial sugar plantation as a uniquely profitable kind of commerce. In a time when issues of race and social justice have arisen with pressing urgency, the book explains how the plantation’s extraordinary profitability relied on a production system that literally worked the slaves to death, creating an insatiable appetite for new captives that made the African slave trade a central feature of modern capitalism for over four centuries.

 

After surveying past centuries roiled by imperial wars, national revolutions, and the struggle for human rights, McCoy seeks to prognosticate about the future, highlighting the ways in which climate change and changing world orders will shape the life opportunities for younger generations. What does the past tell us about the future of the global order? How and why is this order changed? And what will this mean for future generations?

 

Alfred McCoy

Alfred W. McCoy holds the Harrington chair of History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he teaches classes on the Vietnam War, modern empires, and U.S. foreign policy. Most recently, he is the author of "In the Shadows of the American Century: The Rise and Decline of U.S. Global Power" (Chicago, 2017). He is also the author of "Policing America's Empire: The United States, the Philippines, and the Rise of the Surveillance State" (Madison, 2009) which won the Kahin Prize from the Association for Asian Studies.

His best-known book, "The Politics of Heroin," stirred controversy when the C.I.A. tried to block its publication back in 1972, but it has remained in print for nearly 50 years, been translated into nine languages, and is generally regarded as the "classic" work on global drug trafficking.

Martin Luther King, Jr once said, ‘I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character’. This is one of the aspirations many had when they fought against racism. They understood that for this aspiration to succeed everyone must participate in the project of completely transforming society to eradicate racial divisions and achieve equal treatment. Today, with the increasing demand to recognize the seemingly insurmountable gap between black people and white people, identity-based anti-racism has become more of a hindrance than a solution for a better and freer world for us all. The shift, from aspiring to transform social organization in order to transcend racial divisions to demanding recognition of racial divisions and identities and protection for minorities, represents the defeat of the universalist and radical politics of the past. Racial thinking, actively promoted by racists, has now become an acceptable tool for identity-based anti-racist activists in their demand for representation, diversity, inclusivity, segregation and safe spaces. Christine Louis-Dit-Sully examines the origins of racial thinking and the relationship between race and culture, she asks us to recognize that racial thinking is not the only way of understanding ourselves and the world around us.

 

Christine Louis-Dit-Sully

Christine Louis-Dit-Sully grew up in the 'banlieue 93', a working-class area near Paris, France that used to be demonized but she has since lived also in the UK, USA, and Germany. She worked for nearly 20 years in academic biological research. Since leaving her laboratory bench career, she has widened her field of research to politics and humanities.

 

Her research for her second PhD started with her looking at the demand for ‘safe space’ in US and UK universities. It led her to examine important issues such as identity, the self, race, citizenship, the meaning of politics, and identity politics. After reading some of the books and articles published today, she wrote her first book to remind herself and others that there have been and there are other ways of understanding the world around us.

There was a brief hysteria in the media in 2018 and 2019, which returns anytime a new American massacre might be attributed to them, about incels. An incel – short for involuntary celibate - is not simply someone who would like to have sex but isn’t. There are many millions of those in America. Rather it refers to an individual who is not having sex, thinks this is very important, and formed an identity around this. This week we will discuss the development of inceldom and how this movement fits in with the broader discourse relating to the so-called “crisis of masculinity”.

Often time the names of Black historical figures are relegated to the same usual suspects: Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcom X, W.E.B Dubois, or Marcus Garvey. This myopic narrative of Black history leaves out figures who often had radical political agendas that challenged institutions traditional figures did not pick up on until later in their lives. One of those neglected figures is Hubert Harrison, who was deemed, "The Father of Harlem Radicalism." On this episode we will ask Jeffry Perry, author of a two volume series on Harrison's life, what distinguished Hubert Harrison from his contemporaries and made him one of the most important Black figures in American history no one knows about. 

 

About Jeffrey B. Perry

Dr. Jeffrey B. Perry (Jeff Perry) is an independent, working-class scholar formally educated at Princeton, Harvard, Rutgers, and Columbia. The recently published, second volume of his Hubert Harrison biography entitled "Hubert Harrison: The Struggle for Equality, 1918-1927" (Columbia University Press, December 2020) was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize.

Dr. Perry's work focuses on the role of white supremacy as a retardant to progressive social change and on the centrality of struggle against white supremacy to progressive social change efforts.

TIR PRESENTS The Mau Mau Hour w/ Pascal Robert: Class War

Great radical thinkers from Kwame Nkrumah to Amilcar Cabral and Even Frantz Fanon warned that a "neo-colonial bourgeoisie" would arise in the formerly colonized world and fulfil a management role in the exploitation of capitalist production throughout the Black and Brown world. This warning has come to fruition. Even in the United States, the Black Political Class acts as protectors of their own venal interests while acting as racial ventriloquists for the Black poor and working class for fatback and biscuits corporate patronage. In these circumstances is it logical to advocate for internal Black Class warfare against the petite bourgeois who act as the intermediaries with international capital and empire. Should there be an aggressive movement to displace these figures in the Black diaspora to create a politics based on the needs of the poor and working class of the Black world? How would such a program take place? What could be the costs?

The Spanish Civil War of the late 1930s was, in many ways, a dry run for the barbarities of the Second World War. The conflict pitted the forces of the Spanish Republic and their allies on the radical left against the Nationalists and their fascist backers. One of the most significant figures on the left at the time was Buenaventura Durruti, a veteran revolutionary and leading libertarian socialist. As clashes between the Nationalists and Republicans heated up, Durruti led anarchists against military forces in the Barcelona region and, later, in the defense of Madrid where he was killed in late 1936. We speak to Brenton Lengel, the author of a new graphic novel depicting Durruti’s life about who Durruti was, his historical significance, and how we might assess his legacy?

He is best known for his play North to Maine, the first play ever written about the Appalachian Trail and his international anarchist radio program Insurrection with Brenton Lengel.

The Frankfurt School meets Fisher in this critique of capitalism incorporating memes, mental illness and psychedelia into a proposed counterculture. Spring 2020 to 2021 was the year that did not take place. We witnessed a depression, not economically speaking, but in the psychological sense: A clinical depression of and by society itself. This depression was brought about not just by Covid isolation, but by the digital economy, fueled by social media and the meme. In the aftermath, this book revisits the main Frankfurt School theorists, Adorno, Horkheimer, Benjamin and Marcuse, who worked in the shadow of World War Two, during the rise of the culture industry. In examining their thoughts and drawing parallels with Fisher's Capitalist Realism, The Memeing of Mark Fisher aims to render the Frankfurt School as an incisive theoretical toolbox for the post-Covid digital age. Taking in the phenomena of QAnon, twitch streaming, and memes it argues that the dichotomy between culture and political praxis is a false one. Finally, as more people have access to the means for theoretical and cultural broadcasting, it is urged that the online left uses that access to build a real-life cultural and political movement.
