One of the terms of art that has become popularized in the current age of hyper politics is intersectionality. A notion created by academic Kimberle Crenshaw that arose in conjunction with critical race theory, intersectionality became so popular it was weaponized by Hillary Clinton in her 2016 presidential election bid. Is intersectionality anything more than a plea for equality of distribution, recognition, and opportunity in a capitalist political economy that is rooted inequality and exploitation. Is this simply an identitarian plea for inclusion in the seating among the deck chairs of the titanic?

-NBA Finals are set. What do we think about the Celtics/Warriors Finals? 2-Collin Kaepernick had a workout with the Raiders this past week. Is this a sign that the league is allowing him an opportunity to resume his career? Or is this another bullshit attempt at placating the public by the NFL? 3-We’re talking the A’s-they’re the only team averaging less than 10,000 fans a game. Where are the A’s going, because their owner certainly isn’t keeping the team in Oakland?

With the rising tensions between the United States and Russia that have occurred within the last decade, combined with the conflicts the U.S. is experiencing with China many have discussed how a new Cold War has developed between countries within the former Soviet sphere of influence and the United States. Two countries that have been particularly plagued with negative press in the face of such politics are Cuba and Venezuela. Both countries have attempted economic models that have challenged the capitalist norm that dominates world markets. Our guest has recently visited both countries and will give us a view not shared often about how these countries are surviving under strict U.S. sanctions.

One of the constant themes of contemporary racial discourse involves the way white supremacy is dispatched as a notion to explain every aspect of racial harm that Black and Brown people experience. From gentrification to mass incarceration it must be the evil white supremacy that drives all the ills that affect communities of color. Is it possible that using White Supremacy as a universal cause of racialized harm denies more awareness of how capitalism results in harms that are racialized because of the reality of disproportionate labor redundancy for communities of color? Does using White Supremacy to explain racialized social ills do nothing but create a racial grievance system where elites leverage the misery of the Black masses for foundation largesse or a MacArthur genius award?

With the close of Haitian heritage month this May 2022, Haitians throughout the diaspora are celebrating their revolutionary history and its significance. An important aspect of Haitian cultural expression that often faces less praise as an element of Haitian life is Haitian Vodou. As a spiritual manifestation that has deep roots in Haitian society, Haitian Vodou is often mischaracterized and pejoratively deemed as a cultural fetishism. In this episode we will seek to dismiss the myths and stereotypes about Haitian Vodou and clarify its cosmological foundations and core beliefs

He had a manager's retreat to attend to at one of the Davos like ski resorts on the north end of the ice planet Hoth. Taking his place is friend of show, immigration attorney and author, Dan Melo.

A recent article in the San Francisco Chronicle reported violent, and vile unlivable conditions in the city’s Hotels for the unhoused. From overdoses to rat infestations. We witnessed during the early days of the pandemic, the great source of refuge the single room occupancy hotels became for the city’s homeless. Are the hotels as bad as the Chronicle is reporting? Or is this hit piece perfect fodder for a crack down for a vulnerable population that is often overlooked and underfunded.

Randy Shaw is the Editor of Beyond Chron and the Director of San Francisco’s Tenderloin Housing Clinic, which publishes Beyond Chron. Shaw's latest book is Generation Priced Out: Who Gets to Live in the New Urban America. He is the author of four prior books on activism, including The Activist's Handbook: Winning Social Change in the 21st Century, and Beyond the Fields: Cesar Chavez, the UFW and the Struggle for Justice in the 21st Century. He is also the author of The Tenderloin: Sex, Crime and Resistance in the Heart of San Francisco
