Right wing media has had a stranglehold on terrestrial radio and cable news for decades. What led the right to dominate the airwaves and brainwash a generation?
About Jen Senko
Jen Senko, a documentary filmmaker, author, and media-activist based in New York City, is known for her award-winning documentaries; Road Map Warrior Women (2000), The Vanishing City (2010), and The Brainwashing of My Dad (2016) narrated by Matthew Modine. In 2021, The Brainwashing of My Dad received the prestigious People's Voice Award in Public Service & Activism from The Webby Awards. Senko's adaptation of her film into a book of the same name (published on October 5, 2021) tracks the pernicious and addictive rise of right-wing media and how this media served as a tool for libertarian billionaires to get people to vote against their own interests and gain one-party rule. Jen's work focuses on socio political themes with the intent of inspiring activism and fomenting change.

30 years ago America watched in horror as South Central Los Angeles burned after the not guilty verdict was announced in the Rodney King police beating. 28 years later we saw a country wide eruption of frustration over law enforcement's extra judicial killings of George Floyd and Breona Taylor. From 1968 in Watts, to 1992 in South Central, to 2020 what is the main function of these uprisings and what have they accomplished in their wake? What has changed with law enforcement? Is the idea of reforming law enforcement a bourgeois project? Has BLM or Abolish/Defund the Police helped or is it simply a more radical hashtag activism? We’ll ask these questions and more.

Fiorentini began her journalistic work in 2004 with War Resisters League and Left Turn.
From 2013 to 2019, Fiorentini was the host and senior producer of AJ+, the digital media outlet of Al Jazeera. She was the host of AJ+ show Newsbroke.
Since 2016, Fiorentini has appeared on progressive network The Young Turks as a guest and contributor. She is one of the hosts of The Young Turks show The Damage Report hosted by John Iadarola.
In December 2019, Fiorentini hosted the special Red, White & Who on MSNBC discussing the state of healthcare in the United States and the importance of healthcare to American voters beyond the partisan divide.

In the 1998 film the Truman Show, Jim Carrey plays the title character Truman Burbank (true man) who lives an idyllic life in a quaint coastal town that is a cliche of Americana in the 1950’s. A perfect town free of crime, traffic, or unhappy people. Unbeknownst to Truman the town in the largest movie set in the world where his entire life is filmed and broadcasted 24 hours a day as “The Truman Show”. From the womb to adulthood people have followed the adventures of Truman Burbank. From first steps to first kisses, his parents, wife, and friends are all actors. Every experience, every mundane interaction is curated and sold for public consumption by the svengali of this simulated paradise, the director of the show Christof.
Are we now at a point in neoliberal capitalism where unlike Truman we ARE aware that we are indeed the brand to be sold. All our interactions are transactions to be bought and sold. Our only value is a market value. The curated experience isn’t a nightmare, it’s the goal.
